An Examination of Cultural Issues that Impact Recovery in Latino Trauma Survivors

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is overrepresented in the Latino population, yet remains under-treated, particularly among Latino immigrants. The present study examined 133 Latino outpatients in a mental health clinic to identify culturally-relevant variables that predict trauma symptomatology and treatment outcome. Fatalism, peritraumatic dissociation, and demographic variables were analyzed. Peritraumatic dissociation was found to account for a significant percentage of the variance in trauma symptoms (21%), as measured by the Peritraumatic Dissociation Experiences Questionnaire-Modified and the Trauma Symptom Inventory, respectively. Fatalism, as measured by the Multiphasic Assessment of Cultural Constructs was not found to be significantly associated with symptom severity. Finally, a review of 36 participants found that treatment outcome was not adversely affected by the presence of dissociation at intake.
